Glaze is a layer or coating of a vitreous substance which has been fused to a ceramic object through firing in a kiln. Glaze can serve to color, decorate, strengthen or waterproof an item.

In ceramics, glazing is normally the "paint" that is used to decorate an object.

Glazing is important for earthenware vessels as otherwise they would be unsuitable for holding liquids due to porosity. Glaze is also used on stoneware and porcelain. In addition to the functional aspect of glazes, they can form a variety of surface finishes, including degrees of gloss and matte and color. Glazes may also enhance an underlying design or texture which may be either the unmodified texture of the underlying body, or an inscribed, carved or painted design.

Pre-Registration is Required.

Payment for class and materials is due upon arrival for class.

No matter what form of ceramics, glazing is what colors and protects the atrwork.

During this 2-hour class the instructor will explain the use of glazes and how to correctly use them.  She will discuss the different types of glazes and how they relate to the clay used, firing temprature, etc.  This instruction will give potters -- especially new or inexperienced potters -- the opportunity to get to know glazes and work with them.

Students should come away from the class with an understanding of how to use glazes on ceramics.

During the 2-hour class, students will glaze a project that will be allowed to dry at the studio and will be fired in the kiln (usually a 1-3 day process).  After that point, students will be able to take their projects home.

Students may bring an unglazed project from a previous class at Colonial Folk Art Studio & Gallery or a previous class at another art school. Students who do not have a current project ready to glaze may purchase an unglazed sign for $5 to use during the class.

Tuition (includes glaze and final kiln firing): $20
